چکیده

A ntibiotics arguably constitute one of the most important medical discoveries of the last century. Unfortunately, many antibiotics now are rapidly losing effectiveness as bacteria increasingly acquire resistance to multiple medicines. Antibiotic use is the key driver of resistance. Even with appropriate antibiotic use, some resistance will inevitably develop. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics, however, hasten and spread resistance. Concerns about antibiotic overuse in human medicine are widespread and well founded. In 1998, an Institute of Medicine report determined that between 25 percent and 40 percent of antibiotic use in U.S. hospitals is unnecessary, as is 20 percent to 50 percent of physician use in community settings. 1 Increasing resources have been devoted to changing prescribing practices as well as patient expectations. In contrast, routine feeding of antibiotics to animals raised for food has only belatedly attracted the medical community's atten-tion—despite last year's editorial in Science stating the " strong scientific consensus " that routine administration of antibiotics to food animals is " a bad idea. " 2 Agricultural Uses Antimicrobials have a variety of uses in agriculture. (Antibiotic refers to an agent produced by microorganisms that inhibits or kills other microorganisms, while an-timicrobial is a broader and perhaps more accurate term that also includes agents of semisynthetic or synthetic origin). They are appropriately given to livestock and poultry as therapy for infection. Antimi-crobials are also given prophy-lactically to entire groups of nondis-eased animals, typically during periods of high risk for future infection such as after weaning or transport. For decades, antimicrobials have also been given to food animals routinely in feed or water— over longer periods of time and in

The Potential Use of Essential Oil Nanoemulsion as a Novel Alternative to Antibiotics in Poultry Production-A Review

Antibiotics are commonly used due to their antimicrobial activity and widely used for promoting growth, preventing diseases or therapy in poultry. The misuse of antibiotics in livestock production induces resistant bacteria into the environment. Therefore, the need to develop alternatives to antibiotics become increasingly important, that protect and improve global public health. The phytobioti...

Use of antimicrobial growth promoters in food animals and Enterococcus faecium resistance to therapeutic antimicrobial drugs in Europe.

Supplementing animal feed with antimicrobial agents to enhance growth has been common practice for more than 30 years and is estimated to constitute more than half the total antimicrobial use worldwide. The potential public health consequences of this use have been debated; however, until recently, clear evidence of a health risk was not available. Accumulating evidence now indicates that the u...

The public health hazards associated with the non-medical and animal health usage of antimicrobial drugs.

Antimicrobial drugs are used in many ways. They are used for man's health and as agents to help provide or preserve his food. Similarly they are used for animal diseases and as additives to animal feed in hopes of increasing average daily gain and feed efficiency. There are many variables which determine if the use is an efficacious one supported by scientific observation and documentation or i...

American Academy of Pediatrics Technical Report

Antimicrobial resistance is widespread. Overuse or misuse of antimicrobial agents in veterinary and human medicine is responsible for increasing the crisis of resistance to antimicrobial agents. The American Academy of Pediatrics, in conjunction with the US Public Health Service, has begun to address this problem by disseminating policies on the judicious use of antimicrobial agents in humans. ...

Antimicrobial drug use in food-producing animals and associated human health risks: what, and how strong, is the evidence?

BACKGROUND Antimicrobial resistance is a public health threat. Because antimicrobial consumption in food-producing animals contributes to the problem, policies restricting the inappropriate or unnecessary agricultural use of antimicrobial drugs are important. However, this link between agricultural antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance has remained contested by some, with potentially disrupt...

The Effect of Medicinal Plants as a Feed Additive in Ruminant Nutrition

Since the use of antibiotics in animal feeds has been banned, researches on alternative natural products that modulate ruminal fermentation have been intensified. Natural compounds such as plant extracts have been considered to be replaced antibiotics as safe and sustainable alternatives. Plant extracts especially essential oils and saponins have strong antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antiprotozo...
